Nanjing, founded in 900 BC, is a former capital of China (Nanjing literally means the capital of the south), during several periods including the Ming dynasty, the Taiping Rebellion and the Nationalist period.
It is the capital of Jiangsu Province and boasts a population of around 6 million. Lying south of the Yangtze River and to the east of Purple Mountain, alongside many historic sites, it provides all the facilities of a bustling provincial capital. It provides an ideal manageable base from which to begin a study of Chinese language and culture.
