Nanjing University, China: Cultural Activities

Education in China should not be limited to the classroom and four weeks should not be spent in Nanjing alone. That is why the Nanjing Summer Advantage program includes opportunities to study through guided excursions and also to visit two other important contrasting cities in China. You will spend 3 nights in historic Beijing (literally, “the capital of the North”) on arrival, a day excursion to the famous Suzhou and 2 nights in Shanghai, the financial and trade dynamo of China, prior to departure.

Stopover in San Francisco, CA

Meet your AIFS representative and transfer to your accommodations. At the welcome dinner you will get the chance to meet your fellow students. The next morning, say farewell to San Francisco and depart for Beijing, China.

3-day stopover in Beijing

Depart from the United States and arrive in Beijing, the political capital and host to the 2008 Olympics. Meet your AIFS representative and transfer to your hotel for the night. The next day a local guide will show you the famous historic sights of central Beijing including Tian An Men Square, the Forbidden City, and the Lao She Tea House. In the afternoon, you will visit the Beijing Language and Culture University for a tour of the campus. You will join the local students for an early evening at the university before transferring back to the hotel. The following day, a guide will take you to the Great Wall followed by the Summer Palace. The next day you leave Beijing to board your flight to Nanjing.

Hotel accommodations, airport transfers, breakfasts, lunches, dinners, guided tours and entrance fees are all included in your program fee.

Welcome reception

Get to know your fellow students and AIFS staff at a welcome reception in Beijing. Make new friends, sample Chinese food and prepare for your time in Nanjing.

Guided sightseeing tour of Nanjing

On your sightseeing tour, a local guide will introduce you to the different areas of Nanjing and help you get familiarized with your new home. You will see the city walls, the university area, the shopping areas and major sights.

Day Excursion to Suzhou

Nearly everything China and the Chinese are famous for is found in plenty and in the best in Suzhou: silk, tea, food, art, handicraft, architecture, nicety, patience, elegance, creativity, diligence and fine taste. Amazingly, so vast and so profound a culture and history are neatly packed and arranged into a plethora of small wonders. To the Chinese mind, Suzhou means “small beauty”. Known as one of the “Paradises on Earth” in the Far East, the name Suzhou in particular brings to mind the notion of “a magic land heavenly bestowed with wealth and talent”. You will visit the Master of the Nets and the Humble Administrators’ Gardens and enjoy an included lunch of local specialities and time to visit markets.

Purple Mountain Area

You will visit the beautiful park area at the foot of Purple Mountain and see the famous Dr Sun Yat-Sen Mausoleum and the Ming Tombs.

2-day stopover in Shanghai

Depart from Nanjing by tour bus with your AIFS representative and arrive in Shanghai, the rapidly westernizing, commercial and financial capital of China. Transfer to your hotel for welcome dinner and the rest of the evening. The next day your guide will show you key sights of Shanghai, visiting the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, the Yu Yuan Garden, the Bund, the Nanjing Road and local markets.. In the evening you will enjoy a farewell Shanghai river boat cruise. On the final day, you say farewell to China and board your flight to the United States.
