University of Salamanca, Spain: Courses & Workshops
Students have 3 hours of Spanish class a day, 5 days a week, for a total of 60 hours of class, equivalent to 4 credits. All classes are held in the morning. Recommended credits are shown in parentheses. 15 class hours equal one semester credit.
At the elementary level, students have 2 hours of Spanish language each weekday plus one hour each weekday of vocabulary building.
Intermediate students have 2 hours of Spanish language every weekday plus one hour of study each weekday from their choice of the following subjects:
- Introduction to Spanish Culture
- Business Spanish
- Commentary on Literary Texts
- Translation of English to Spanish
- Contemporary Spanish History Oral and
- Written Spanish Skills
For-Credit Courses
Note: A placement exam at the University of Salamanca will be required when you arrive in Salamanca.
Spanish Language
Spanish Language 101 (4)
Nivel Elemental/Elementary
For students with little or no previous Spanish language experience. Equal to an Advanced elementary or low Intermediate course in most U.S. universities. Conducted in Spanish, includes 2 hours of Spanish grammar and conversation emphasizing fluency. Focus to on functional uses of language (greetings, saying goodbye, introducing one self, asking for information such as addresses, time of day, etc.). The grammar covers (alphabet, present verbs, introductions to past verbs, simple comparisons, ser/estar, ir a plus infinitive, etc.).
Spanish Language 201 (4)
Nivel Intermedio/Intermediate
Suitable for students who have a basic knowledge of Spanish grammar and with enough vocabulary to participate in class conversation. Grammar content includes: ser versus estar, preterit versus imperfect verbs, the conditional, future tense, estar plus gerund, superlatives, making hypothesis, etc.). The communication skills focus on narrating in past and future., giving advice, describing in both the past and future, asking and giving information about curriculum vitae, etc.).
Spanish Language 301 (4)
Nivel Avanzado/Advanced
Equivalent to an extremely advanced undergraduate course or a basic graduate course in most U.S. universities. This course focuses strongly on communicative and grammar skills. Content includes: the subjunctive, pluscuamperfecto, correct uses of ser and estar, phrases with prepositions that indicate time, por and para, personal pronouns, etc. Students will learn to express feelings, impressions, possibilities and desires.
Spanish Language 401 (4)
Nivel Superior/Superior
Bilingual students usually place in this level. Content focuses on refining and further developing communication as well as grammatical skills. Content includes: alternate of indicative and subjunctive, general and specific uses of ser and estar, future conditional and imperative.
Non-Credit Courses
These are non-credit academic courses taught by the University of Salamanca. Places are limited and should be reserved in advance. Students who are interested in taking non-credit courses must indicate on the “Option Form” and pay the University of Salamanca directly upon arrival. The University reserves the right to cancel any of these courses.
Folkloric Dance
Spanish regional dancing taught by a well-known dance teacher. Castanets may be purchased locally at a moderate cost. Held only if a minimum of 10 students enroll, this course totals 12 hours. A supplement of $65 must be paid before departure.
Spanish Guitar
This practical course of group instruction is taught at all levels for one hour per week by a local instructor. A supplement of $85 must be paid before departure. Students provide their own guitars or rent them.
Spanish Songs
The objective of this practical course is to learn songs from the different regions of Spain. A supplement of $55 must be paid before departure.
Spanish Cinema
Students will see 8 films preceded by a description and followed by a discussion. A supplement of $40 must be paid before departure.
