University of Salamanca, Spain: Student Life
Housing and meals
Students live with a Spanish family. Students are placed at least two to a family and have breakfast, lunch and dinner with them, 7 days a week. Food or drinks between meals must be bought by the student outside the home. Students have their own keys and may come and go as they please, within reason, and must be home before curfew.
Facilities
The Summer Advantage office is located right near the Plaza Mayor and is open five days a week. Supervision and staff Students are given information on what to expect, rules of conduct and general procedures. AIFS staff are on call 24-hours a day and contactable by cell phone. They assist in academic advising and registration, provide travel guidance, and help students gain access to counseling and medical assistance, if necessary. Staff also coordinate a weekly newsletter providing information as well as practical advice and news on cultural events.
Keeping in touch
Students will receive a free phone card on arrival to call the United States and 3 hours for free in a cybercafe. The University provides free e-mail accounts and access, but only for academic purposes. A more convenient method may be to purchase time at a cybercafé and open up a web based e-mail account. We strongly recommend that students purchase a cell phone for the duration of the program. AIFS staff will provide more information on how to do this at the on-site orientation meeting.
Visas
Visas are not required for U.S. citizens staying in Spain less than 3 months.
